I suspect that it's because they ARE black boxes. A gyrator is an
"impedance inverter" and it's used, along with a capacitor, to
functionally replace an inductor. As far as the circuit goes, the
"component" is an inductor, but the appropriate one probably won't fit
in the space or costs too much.
Here's a link to a paper by Fred Forsell on an equalizer design that
uses a gyrator that might be similar to your Klark equalizer.
