Not true. You can mount them like acoustic wall panels a few inches
off of the walls on dowels or rods. The sound isn't as good, but even
in that configuration it stomps on flat panel and in-wall speakers.

In fact, they have a picture of just such a setup in on the Magenpan
website.

When mounted that way, their advantage over a wall mounted box
diminishes considerably. They then have no bass and the bass from a
decent little box, imho, is more useful than the slightly greater
transparency of the Maggie. Used right, it's another story.

True, but they ARE unobtrusive. Since the MMGs don't really do
bass any more than the flat panel speakers, in actual use, the
MMGs sound fine mounted a few inches off the wall. The farther out
you mount them the better - 4-6 inches seems to work well.

I'd not try this with the larger Magnepans, but for the MMG, wall-mounting
works.

If one can forego real deep bass, the pivot-mounted MGMC1s are a good
choice. They can be put flush to the wall when not in use and angled
out for listening. Get down to about 80Hz.

80 Hz? Only if you consider maximun SPL @ 72 dB SPL ( +10% distortion)
"getting down to."
