Default why is distortion bad for speakers

hello,

Mr. Dorsey indicated in a recent post that distortion is really bad for
speakers. Why is that?

'Distortion' per se is mainly irrelevant.

Very large distortion - e.g. severe clipping - may present a problem since
it will be full of harmonics whose energy may well be in the tweeter band
and this may 'overload' the tweeter e.g. burn it out.

In such circumstances an unclipped signal from a 'bigger' amplifier may
actually be kinder on the speaker despite the apparently larger power.

In any case you should be able to hear clipping and turn it down.
