Hi,
I am looking to make a Hi-Fi system at home for around the 3,500 with
4,000
being my upper limit. I was looking at staying at 3,500 and then doing
cabling on top of that (which i expect will be around 200 to 300 dollars).
All i am looking at buying was an AV Receiver, and a Set of 5
Speakers......and leaving the sub out for moment (and purchasing that in
about a years time when i have the cash flow again).
I want to use the system for about 50% music, 50% movies, that is why the
Sub can wait a little while. And having a young family who do not
appreciate loud movies at night with booming Base its fine. The Sub i saw
that i liked for my budget was the Richter Thor which i think retails
around
the 1,000 mark.
The AV Receiver i have looked at and LIked was the ONKYO SR502 or 602
(SR502
retails for 899 in Aust, and the 602 for 1399)....Now i know i can get
these
cheaper....realistically teh most i would want to spend on a receiver is
around that 1,000.
The only other receiver i have been looking at but yet to try was one of
the
DENON's either for my budget will probably be the 2105. Which i dont
think
has as good a features as teh SR602.
Leaving around 2,500 for Speakers...
So far i have tried the Wharfedales and Missions that i liked..... (I
think
the Wharf's sounded best when i tried them against the DB Dynamics, and
Accusounds), and i tried the Missions in a shop against the Mordent-SHorts
(probably spelt wrong)...
I am still to try brands like Krix, KEF, Whatmough, Dali...
The KEF Q series seem to get glowing review and i know they are a stretch,
but without a sub they fit in my budget, and i love the asthetic look of
them. I dont mind the Wharfedales either.
Can anyone give me some decent advice mainly on what speakers are going to
be good to try on my budget.....and what speakers i am really wasting my
time trying.....it would be much appreciated..
As most shops in the sydney area only have maybe one or two of these
brands
so it is really hard to do a cross comparision of all teh speakers at the
same time..
My musical taste is mainly orchestral soundtracks (Ie. John Williams,
James
Horner, etc) , classical/theatre, pop (Maroon 5, G.Michael, Crowded House,
etc), rock (Queen, u2, etc)..
Also if there is another news group i should be posting this article to
for
feedback please advise and i will do that as well.
Not that this will help at all but I would seriously suggest getting
separate setups for music and film. They are two different forms and demand
different setups. Music is more about getting into the mind of the composer,
and film is more about the experience. For music, get a system that plays
the notes correctly. For film, get a 5.1 system. I like Maggies for music
and a well-matched 5.1 system for film, consisting of standard drivers in a
line array. Positioning the sub will take some time, but it will be worth it
in the end. The line array is good because it spreads out the sound well,
and most movie soundtracks are balanced for this type of hardware. With
movies it's about impact and ambience, and with music it's about intimacy. I
would never trade my Beringers for Maggies, but I would also never trade
Maggies for some box speaker for music. I guess what I'm saying is that you
should figure on spending the most on what you really, truly love, be it
music or movies. I chose music, and got Beringers for my computer. They have
been wonderful. I have heard Maggies plenty of times, and if I could afford
them I would scarf them up in a heartbeat. But be that as it may, I still
think you should think about what you will be listening to the most and
throw your dollars towards that.
