The Cable budget.............well it was not all of $500
dollars..............that was a buffer..........
I want to spend as near to 3,500 as possible on receivers and
speakers...........and then i anticipate around the 200 approx on cabling as
it is a large room (6 x 6 m).....with the cables going through roof and
stuff.....
this way if i needed an extra few hundred to get the receiver i want or
speakers i have it.....

Thanks for the Advice when it came to speakers......
It was not the Diamonds i tried in the Wharf's ....i cant remember what it
was but i know the diamonds and it was not them.....

I did like the missions as well so i will go back and check them out and
also try the lot you suggested.....

Yes my budget of around the 3,500 to 4,000 is approx 1,500 pounds....

I saw in JB Hi-fi today they had the Onkyo SR502 for 580 dollars reduced
from around the 850..... (retails for 899)....so that may be the receiver i
go for after i try a few on teh weekend......as i tried it last weekend and
did like the sound it produced....
Also if i get it that cheap it leaves me around 3,000 to spend on speakers
which means i can delve into a 2,000 Rec retail pair....as opposed to around
that 1,500 pair....

I will also try out those stores....was planning to go to Sydney Hifi and
Life style store at parra this weekend as well as JB hifi at
Parra..............may also try and squeeze in Len Wallis as well. My m
ate has shopped there a bit he said it was like Disney land when it came to
hifi shopping.....(ie. nothing beats it in sydney)....

Bassett, did you have any recommendations for speakers i should be trying
for around a 3,000 package??? (i am still to try some whatmough's, dali's,
KEF's). Like i said i was only impressed so far with Missions and
WHarfedales.....

If your in Sydney, go down to Hi-Fi Junction at Bondi, or Audio Connection
at Parramatta Road, Leichhardt. He has a far bit of trade stuff, also
superseded stuff. Len Wallis, North Sydney, also has traded stuff, check

out
the web sites of both.
With that sort of money, you should be able to pick up a package deal,

keep
an eye on the Sydney Morning Herald's Monday Supplement , "the guide" for
specials in Hi-Fi.
As for spending that sort of money on Cables. You have rocks in your

head,
or do fancy named cables, in equally fancy packages, costing fancy prices,
convince you that your getting better sound. Very doubtful..

Hi,

Hi!

I am looking to make a Hi-Fi system at home for around the 3,500 with
4,000
being my upper limit. I was looking at staying at 3,500 and then doing
cabling on top of that (which i expect will be around 200 to 300
dollars).
All i am looking at buying was an AV Receiver, and a Set of 5
Speakers......and leaving the sub out for moment (and purchasing that

in
about a years time when i have the cash flow again).

You're talking in Australian dollars, right? So that's £1500 or about US
$2500.

The AV Receiver i have looked at and LIked was the ONKYO SR502 or 602
(SR502
retails for 899 in Aust, and the 602 for 1399)....Now i know i can get
these
cheaper....realistically teh most i would want to spend on a receiver

is
around that 1,000.

The only other receiver i have been looking at but yet to try was one

of
the
DENON's either for my budget will probably be the 2105. Which i dont
think
has as good a features as teh SR602.

I don't know about the Onkyos but I've got a 2105 and it's hard to

fault.
I haven't noticed it missing any features either.

Leaving around 2,500 for Speakers...
So far i have tried the Wharfedales and Missions that i liked..... (I
think
the Wharf's sounded best when i tried them against the DB Dynamics, and
Accusounds), and i tried the Missions in a shop against the
Mordent-SHorts
(probably spelt wrong)...

Which Wharfedales did you try? I was appalled by the Diamond 9s. I ended
up with Mission Volares, 2 pairs of V60s and a V6C. No sub but that

hardly
matters - the bass was so impressive when I tested them in the shop that

I
was wondering if they'd secretly hidden a sub somewhere!

By the way don't buy a combination of Denon and Missions without

listening
to it. The sound may be a bit too bright for some and possibly a little
weak in the midrange (although I'm not convinced mine are properly

run-in
yet - they're still improving after a couple of months).

The KEF Q series seem to get glowing review and i know they are a
stretch,
but without a sub they fit in my budget, and i love the asthetic look

of
them. I dont mind the Wharfedales either.

The Volares are pretty gorgeous too :-)

Can anyone give me some decent advice mainly on what speakers are going
to
be good to try on my budget.....and what speakers i am really wasting

my
time trying.....it would be much appreciated..
As most shops in the sydney area only have maybe one or two of these
brands
so it is really hard to do a cross comparision of all teh speakers at

the
same time..

I know how you feel - I think the only place in Britain you can get a
decent selection is London. I realised after buying mine that I should
have found some B&Ws to listen to.

My musical taste is mainly orchestral soundtracks (Ie. John Williams,
James
Horner, etc) , classical/theatre, pop (Maroon 5, G.Michael, Crowded
House,
etc), rock (Queen, u2, etc)..

Also if there is another news group i should be posting this article to
for
feedback please advise and i will do that as well.

uk.rec.audio seems to be pretty lively and there are some knowledgable
regulars.
