Good God! I just got back from a Richard Thompson concert. As good as he
generally is, tonight he was transcendent. Just amazing. Maybe he more
rehearsed and relaxed; maybe he was in a good mood (rumor has it he was
in town for a wedding). His song selection was more upbeat than usual:
"I Wanna See The Bright Lights" but no "Shoot Out The Lights", "52
Vincent Black Lightning" but no "Beeswing". Still, an evening including
"Crawl Back" "Outside of the Inside" and "Gethsemane" isn't all hugs and
puppies, and if he was in town for a wedding, "Ghost of You Walks" and
"Keep Your Distance" aren't exactly first dance material. Even a happy
song has the title "Wall of Death". Light-hearted songs include "My
Daddy is a Mummy" "Hokey Pokey" and a Lehrer-esque number about
Alexander Graham Bell. Ahoy-ahoy!
Thanks, JA, for the profile in last month's Stereophile. It's really a
shame his older material isn't available in the best sound quality
possible
If there is better sound quality than vinyl I haven't heard it.
I started with the Hannibal reissues 20 years ago but haven't seen any
of them in stores for nearly tht long. The Polydor vinyl isn't that
great (the first cds are bad, haven't heard the early 90s remasters).
The Capitol vinyl is rare while the cds are okay. The Island vinyl from
the 70s is no great shakes either.
My ideal would be a top quality reissue including vinyl.
