Default Can option to "try to open as 24 bit" cause problems w/16 bit 44.1 recording?

Issue #657 on the list of "things I don't really understand regarding
audio".

Using Soundforge 5.0, I notice one of the options checked is "try to open as
24 bit". What would be the reason to do this, is there any reason/advantage
to doing so when you're recording at 16-bit 44.1? Conversely, could it cause
problems? What exactly is meant by "open as 24 bit"?

Using an Audigy2 soundcard if this has any bearing.

Thanks for any input.
