Anything out there under $500? Thanks guys.
How much current? How good a sine does it really need to be? Could
you survive with a ferroresonant regulator or a line conditioner instead
of a UPS?
Well, after additional research this past week and some good advice here
from Scott and others, we just plunked down US$490 for the little 500 VA
Liebert. (I say "little" -- that honker weighs 50 lbs!)
Our critical load will be around 290 VA, so it seems like a reasonable fit
with room to grow. And, as one rep pointed out, the more you oversize a
Sine UPS, the more signifcant the inefficiency becomes in your overall
power picture, given the power overhead of the system. (In general
they're supposed to be 85-90% efficient at full load, which isn't too
bad.)
If you want longer runtime, add batteries. Most of the sineUPS
systems support this.
Given a remote we did a while back, with 5-15 volt swings and who
knows what all else from the 80 year old wiring in that building, I will
*never* let that happen again. We finally got a recording, but I probably
aged 10 years that evening.
Assuming the Liebert does all it's supposed to do, it's money well spent
for location work.
