At least in the eighties, it was. I recall Penn and Teller splattering
Carson with water and his lav mike cut out. They went to just the SM33
on the desk (and maybe some boom) and the voice quality was very different.
Not bad but much less present.

The 77 on Letterman's desk (does King still use one in shot?) is never
actually used except for cute Moments to prove it still works I think?

Dunno, I haven't ever seen Letterman.
