Motorola once made a 1-bit microprocessor that worked this way (serial
computation). This was the MC14500.


I don't think the MC14500 exactly took the world by storm, although I
could be wrong. Also I don't believe the MC14500 was intended as a
general purpose computer, I think its intended application was to replace
the relays in relay control ladders.
