Well, then something is misadjusted.
In this case, the recording started out as a preproduciton demo and
then evolved.
Many recording projects do. The way they fix technical problems in the
recording is to re-record the tracks that have problems.
Experiments are good. That's how you learn what works and what
doesn't. If your experiment demonstrated that the mic preamps clipped
on peaks, you could do another live session, this time setting the
preamp gain lower.
