Karl Uppiano over on rec.audio.tech posted this in a discussion of surround
sound alternatives. It is a truly fascinating series of articles by Wendy
Carlos (of "Switched On Bach") fame, who was a dual composition and physics
major at Columbia and has been mastering in surround sound since the '60's.
The series is non-technical in nature although dealing with physics and
hearing, but brought to life through descriptions of her own
experimentation. However, she also includes an excellent technical
bibliography covering the pioneering work done in surround and
pseudo-surround since Blumlein's work of the early '30's.

Take an hour off and have a good read.
Thanks, Karl, for such a fascinating reference that I would never in a
million years have stumbled on myself.
