I held back on London Calling because of rumors that it wasn't a new
mastering and the three-disc price. The bonus dvd might be worth having.
I'd rid myself of the original cd issue when the 1999 versions came out
because I hated the "Now on CD!" artwork.

The DVD is surprisingly good and though I haven't seem it completely, I do
believe that they have some footage from a show in Austin. In fact on the
back cover of the 1999 remastered CD, they have some photographs from a show
in Austin. I believe the venue was Stubbs.

I just looked at mine. The photo is from the Armadillo World
Headquarters. The Rock the Casbah video was shot around here, too. The
other strong Austin connection is Joe Ely, who played some US shows with
the Clash and was on the English London Calling tour.

I've been surprised to find some older masterings superior to newer
ones. I was happy with my Deluxe Edition Who Sell Out until I took
chance on the early MCA version. Good God! "I Can See For Miles" is
clearer and tastefully eq'ed on the new disc, but is an instrument of
menace on the old one. Plus, the guitar solo is panned properly.

In that case, do avoid The Who's Ultimate Collection. It's bright enough to
warrant a pair of sunshades.

That's the kind of thing. The best Who collection for me is the Canadian
version of Meaty Beaty Big and Bouncy.
