The true goal is obviously not to impart the same sound as the
over-priced, over-styled and under-engineered Fabers, but to impart a
sound that has superior quality.
...I'm amazed that you haven't figured
out the market segment that Sonus Faber is addressing. An oviously
badly needed hint for the audio tyro: Sonus Faber as a brand has more
do to with looks than sound quality.
Newbie readers should completely disregard Mr Kruegers asinine
comments regarding Sonus Faber. This is an extremely competent brand,
producing highly regarded, highly enjoyable, exquisitely musical
speakers.
Yes and they use drivers that are or were available to the DIY market.
The proof in the pudding is in the listening, which I doubt
Mr Krueger has done. Note that this sicko takes exception to almost
any product that is not utilitarian by design.
I don't see where he said it isn't utilitarian, only that it's more about
style than sound. I don't know that there is anything in the style of the
cabinets of Sonus Faber speakers that contributes anything special to the
radiation pattern of the sound coming from the drivers. They do make a
claim that their cabinet virtually eliminates resonance, AFAIK there is no
way to eliminate resonance, only to diminish it.
They are very nice to look at and the 2 way units I have heard sound very
nice, but not IMO worth what they ask. $40,000 for the Stradavari is a bit
much especially when compared to something like the Linkwitz Orion, designed
by a world class designer like Sigried Linkwitz, which IMO are better
looking. YMMV.
Check them out at
www.madisound.com and click on the kits link and then the
Orion one.
