What kind of sound system? How? What do you want to limit the volume for
and what sort of limiting characteristics do you need? Do you want to
prevent speaker damage, prevent the neighbors from complaining, prevent
hearing damage? Is your big problem conducted vibration or high end sound?

There are plenty of ways to cause a system to shut down or start chattering
when a given sound level is reached. This doesn't affect the dynamics at
all until you get to a particular level. But, how you measure that given
sound level is very important and depends on what you want to do.
