Hello everyone,
Advance appreciation for your time, as always. One question: has
anyone successfully used USB MIDI interfaces and/or USB-compatible
mixing boards (such as the Yamaha 02R96/DM2K) with USB-over-Cat5
extenders? The machine closet in the new studio we are putting
together is too far away for regular USB cables and active "extension"
cables are too big for conduit. In addition, the computer in question
has to be controlled from two separate consoles (at different times)
which are in two different rooms. My thought was to get one
transmitter unit and use a closet-mounted Cat5 patch panel to patch to
the two receiver units that would be installed in the two rooms.
If I had a console that supported Yamaha's Studio Manager like the 01V,
DM1K, 02R or DM2k, I'd put a cheap desktop computer running Studio Manager
within USB distance of the console , and use Windows XP's Remote Console
Support (RCS) to control Studio Manager from a remote computer running the
RCS client for Win31, Win95, Win98, Win2K or WinXP.
RCS uses a TCP/IP connection, so the RCS client computer could be anyplace
in the world, or on a wireless LAN.
