we are about to track vocals and I'm thinking of renting a mic.

The mics we have a
AKG C414
EV RE20
SM57

The preamps we have a
Brent Averil Neve 1272
Avalon 2 channel preamp (I dont know the model)
Focusrite Red1

With that assortment and a halfway decent room, if you can't make a
decent vocal recording, you need a better singer. While an RE20 or
C414 wouldn't be my first choice for an unknown voice, they're
different enough so that you should be able to cover about anything
with them.

You must belong to the "Get a great mic preamp, it'll make any mic
sound better." camp. If you want to go for a mic rental, I'd suggest
something classic and reliable like a U87.
