A 9V battery will heat a piece of 0.3mm mechanical pencil lead up to
orange heat for long enough to start a fire. Handy camping trick
when your matches are wet.

Hey works with a piece of steel wool too. I cheated on one of our boy
scout outings with just this trick to start a fire on a windy day g.

I accidentally dropped the spare battery pack to my wife's Icom 2
meter transceiver in my trousers pocket with my change and keys and
soon found myself with a hot leg.

NEedless to say I cooked the pack and had to rebuild it.
