What are the best online sites for buying/selling high quality used
audio stuff? Auctions as well as fixed price sales ok. I only know eBay
but there must be something better out there...
www.audiogon.com
Maybe eBay.com. Whether it's exactly the "best" is tough to answer.
What's "best" about eBay is that it's a famous place that many, many
people shop at. IOW, what might be considered to make eBay possibly
the "best" place to buy/sell is that it's eBay.
Places like Audiogon probably attract, on average, more knowledgeable
customers. eBay attracts more customers, I bet, and within that group
there are knowledgeable customers.
Also, places like Audiogon probably make it easier to find/sell the
sort of gear you'd be interested in. At eBay, the only way I could
shop now is by having a clear idea of what I want and searching for
that item specifically.
So I'd say Audiogon has a smaller, but more sophisticated audience. In
contrast, eBay has a huge audience, and a more sophisticated audience
within that group. A possible negative for eBay is that as a seller,
you often must compete against other vendors selling the same thing as
you are.
What many people do these days is post on the following newsgroup:
rec.audio.marketplace
....then include in their posts the URL for an eBay auction. Then they
reach the RAM audience and bring the RAM reader directly to their eBay
auctions. Look at RAM and you'll see what I mean.
