There is, it looks like, much better support for handling an Apple
AirPort Express... but unfortunately, those lack any kind of IR remote
control (a fatal flaw in my opinion).

Hmmm...I had wanted to avoid another computer, but maybe a good sound
card with an optical out in one of my old computers with a minimal
Linux configuration and the JavaHMO would be the best option for
convenience, sound quality and price performance. I can mount the
music library rather than replicate it.


Sorry, the way JavaHMO works is that it exports your music library to a
Series 2 TiVo with a LAN adapter (ethernet or wireless). It doesn't
play itself.
