Hey -

I'm setting up a little stereo for my dorm room, and I have everything
picked out...except for the subwoofer. My background in audio is
mostly in the car, where I have a really nice system that I'm happy
with. However, that system stays parked 90% of the time, where now it
does me no good

So, I need recommendations for a small powered sub that would be good
in a dorm room. Needs to be able to have some serious output on
occasion, and have good SQ. Budget is under $500...firm. Subs I'm
thinking about, to give you an idea of where I'm at:

Adire Rava (seems like the most for the money)
Aperion S-8 (although frankly I have doubts over the output from a
single 8")

any others? please, I'm stuck here

thanks in advance.

Try the Hsu STF-1. It has a list price of $300 and manages
to surpass the performance of several considerably more
expensive other subs I have previously auditioned. It also
has an 8-inch driver (but what a driver!), and it is not a
space-consuming design. I review it, along with the
company's interesting Ventriloquist surround-speaker package
in the current issue (number 101) of The Sensible Sound.

Enjoyed that review and the comparisons of the Hsu sub to other makes
and models. The speakers and sub were also reviewed in Sound & Vision
recently, BTW.

However, I'd still recommend headphones, not a sub, for a dorm room.
