I'm setting up a little stereo for my dorm room, and I have everything

Prepare to be hated by everyone else in your building. A
sub-woofer in a concrete and steel building will carry the
thumping noise throughout the entire structure, annoying
everyone who lives there. How about turning the bass down,
keeping your friendships alive, and worry about the boom-
booms until you have a place of your own after school.
My thoughts also. My recommendation:

I like the Grado SR80 for $95, but there are many other good choices.
You can enjoy the loud bass when you're in your car.
You could use that $500 to pay for books, tuition, travel, grad
school, seminars elsewhere, and anything else that you would enjoy and
would contribute to your education. Or save that $500 and start a fund
for a down payment to buy a home after you graduate.
I'd also suggest you not buy pricey audio gear for a dorm room. Way to
easy to steal it. Also, if you don't have it already, talk to some
insurance agents and make sure you're properly insured for your audio
and electronics gear in car and dorm room (renter's insurance would
probably work, but ask some agents). Should be very cheap to insure.
College campuses often have quite a lot of theft, so get insurance and
protect yourself.
Guess I sound like a parent...and that's what I am! ;-)
