I wonder if anyone has experience with the Sony CDR-W66 Recorder?
If so, I am especially interested how it sounds with standard pre-recorded
CDs?

I own a CDR-W33, which is very similar to the W66 (minus a few convenience
features). For playback, it sounds fine -- but like a lot of consumer CD
players these days, I find the fast-forward/rewind controls are extremely
slow and irritating. But for just regular playback and track-advance, it's
pretty solid. Recordings are fine, too.
I also understand that it incorporates a balance control and an equalizer.
Can both of these be operated via the remote control for CD PLAYBACK?

No. Both the level controls and the EQ are only for recording. Note that
both the W33 and W66 also have built-in limiters (defeatable) as well. I'm
fairly certain that even for record, you have to adjust those features at the
machine itself, not by remote. I think you might be able to turn the record
limiter and/or record EQ on and off with the remote, but you can't change
them once the recording has started.
