I noticed that, too, and I'm also curious about how it was done. I
assumed it was creative application of delays and stuff during the
recent production of the source, rather than having been done at the
time of the recording. It sounds at times like the guitar was
reamped (for real or digitally) and the second guitar given quite a
different tone and both copies panned hard to each side. The effect
comes and goes at strategic times. It doesn't sound natural, but
sure sounds good.
