Regarding sugestion to alter the circuitry itself: It may work well
when one knows their circuits and have some margins to spare. There
are cases where one is forced to trade something for the extra gain.
The tradeoff may be reduced bandwidth or worse distortions. When a
design depends a lot on negative feedback to get distortions in line,
using more of the availble gain (open loop gain)to amplify, leaves you
with less for the feedback correction.
The Gordon Model 3 provides up to 70 dB of gain and uses no global
feedback (at a price, of course.)
