View Full Version : Setup evaluation

Hey all, just interested in seeing opinions on the setup I am planning
on putting in my car.
Goals: Decently clean sound, not looking to win competitions or blow
out windows, but nice crisp sound that I can occasionally crank
without distortion.
Environment - 1995 Civic Del Sol Si, which I will be applying dynamat
or other sound damper when I replace the interior carpet, and also
applying dynamat to the interior of the doors, possibly the back wall
of the trunk. Front speakers are 6.5", located at the front bottom of
the doors, I'll mount the tweeters of the components just above them.
Rear speakers are also 6.5", located just below shoulder level on the
back "curve" of the corners. On a sol, that means they are about a
foot behind the seats.
Head Unit - Had been a Pioneer until I saw the review of the Sony
GT805 on here a couple days ago, so that is the head unit I am going
with.
Amplifier - JBL GTO 75.45 II 4 channel - Specs:
# 104 Watts RMS x 4 channels at 4 ohms and ≤ 1% THD + N
# Signal-to-noise ratio: 80dBA (reference 1 watt into 4 ohms)
# 142 Watts RMS x 4 channels at 4 ohms, 14.4V supply and ≤ 1% THD + N
# Dynamic power: 163 watts at 2 ohms
# Effective damping factor: 6.384 at 4 ohms
# Frequency response: 10Hz – 83Hz (–3dB)
# Maximum input signal: 5.8V
# Maximum sensitivity: 230mV
# Output regulation: .069dB at 4 ohms
# 12dB Built-in, variable, low-pass electronic crossover
Front speakers - Boston Acoustics SL 60 components
Rear speakers - Boston Acoustics SL65 coaxial
Any recommendations on speaker wire, or just general monster cable
type will do? Also, with the max wattage of the amp at 142, I
shouldn't need a capacitor. Is the amp capable enough, or should I get
a higher powered one?
Thanks!
John

....All questions of opinion, John. :-)
For example, my opinion is that the particular amp you're using will
be more than enough to power four speakers. If I remember correctly,
you were asking about putting together a system with no subwoofer (for
now) - so no worries there. Also, in my experiences opinion, high
cost (supposedly high quality) speaker wire is a waste of money.
Radio Shack speaker wire works just as well as Brand-Name High-End
wire, but at half the cost. The only thing to keep in mind is the
gauge of the wire (don't get something ridiculously thin).
So there are my opinions on the matter, but I'm sure more are to come.

Yeah, that's what I figured (re: the wire), I look at monster cables
and all I see is thick copper wire in a fancy wrap. Just wanted to
make sure.
The head unit has three preouts, so if I want to add a sub/amp combo
later, it won't be a problem.

....you do realize that he's installing this in a Del Sol, right? I
sincerely doubt that double the power is necessary.
