Hey all-

I've got a civic del sol si (1995) that I am in the process of turning
into a track car. The class I'm in I don't need to gut it, and during
the whole process I'm looking at upgrading the sound. The car has no
stereo currently (Thank you thieves), although it does have 4 unknown
speakers still installed.

I am looking at getting a Phoenix Gold amp (No specific model yet),
possibly a capacitor, most likely either a Sony or Kenwood CD/iPod
head unit, and replacing the speakers.

Now, I'm not going to any competitions with it, and I don't care if I
can rattle out my neighbors windows. I do want nice clean, legible
sound (Although I am by no means a picky audiophile.)

Can I get away with an amp that is a couple years old? I'm thinking
four channel. I don't think I'll be adding a sub, although somewhere
down the line that might be a vague possibility.

What would some recommendations for speakers for the above? Any
specific recommendations for the amp/capacitor?

Thanks everyone!

John

Hi John,

I can only recommend what I've had personal experience with, so I'll
do that. :-)

I HIGHLY recommend the JBL CS60.4 for an amplifier. 60 watts (rms/
constant) per channel may not sound like a hell of a lot, but with the
speakers I'm about to recommend, it's quite nice!

In conjunction with this amplifier, I suggest two pairs of the Polk
Audio db 650 speakers. These coaxial 6.5" speakers are rated to
handle 60 watts constantly (180 watts peak), and they've been
impressing me since I bought them (over a year ago).

A small suggestion I might offer you is that if you potentially want
to expand your system later (i.e. add a subwoofer, car computer,
whatever), you can save yourself a bit of time, energy, and money
later by picking out the right head unit now. There are only two
things I suggest for head units these days:

First, make sure you have three pairs of preamped outputs (Front,
Rear, and Sub).
Second, make sure you have at least one input (my personal preference
is an RCA line-in).

With those two features, just about any deck will serve most future
needs.

I hope all of that helps!
