View Full Version : A sealed and ported sub enclosure

Was up too late the other night and it occurred to me that it should
be possible to design a sub that has ports which can be sealed off
with a solenoid driving a plug, giving you the best of both worlds.
The driver can just pick when he's listening to music best reproduced
by a ported box and when the box should be sealed?

This is something that would be far, far beyond my skill sets, but it
sounds interesting. Has anyone ever done or tried this?

I'm just thinking that the solennoid (S) could push a plate (P) back
and forth to cover or expose the port. Or, since ported boxes are
generally larger IIRC, a solenoid could expose a separate portion of
the box that had the extra space and port.

Purely an intellectual exercise on my part, of course...

It certainly can and has been done to some degree... Though as a DIY
project - I wouldn't really know where to begin. The install that comes to
mind is Mike Eldridge's Toyota 4-Runner (of JBL - formerly Kicker) - that
has a woofer chamber that went from a sealed enclosure to a free-air
enclosure from the press of a button.
