View Full Version : MTX 801 Class D amp question.....

MOSFET
September 7th 07, 06:48 AM
Hey guys, looking for some advice.

I recently bought an MTX Class D 801 on fle-bay (as Howdy affectionately
calls it). Now I should have been suspicious (OK, I was) as it was
"untested" and sold AS-IS.

I contacted the buyer before the auction closed and asked why he didn't
bother testing it as he could OBVIOUSLY get a LOT more for it if he knew it
worked. Class D amps tend to sell for the highest value on Ebay and MTX is
certainly one of the better brands.

Well, he had really no good reason, but I bid anyway and won it for fairly
cheap, about $30 I believe. I got it and, of course, it was DOA. I have
VERY little electrical experience so there was little I could do other than
open it up and look for an obvious problem (blown FET's or a bad connection)
but could find nothing apparently wrong.

The seller said he would return my money if I sent it back but frankly if
this amp DID work it would be PERFECT for my application as I need it to
drive two 12" MTX MXS's (exactly like their 7500 series). They need about
700 watts RMS.

These amps obviously go for quite a bit new ($400+) and even used are
generally in the $150+ range. I wouldn't mind paying $100 if I could make
this one work (hell, just sending it back to the guy would cost me AT LEAST
$30 bucks).

Does anyone know MTX's policy on amp repair rates. For instance, I know for
years Rockford Fosgate charged $100 for an amp repair NO MATTER WHAT was
wrong with it. I'm wondering if MTX has such a policy.

Any info would be appreciated, obviously a phone call to my local MTX dealer
would also answer this question, but I thought I would run it by you guys
first.

Thanks a lot!!!

Nick

unless you are a capable electronic tech it will cost a bundle for
labor and parts. Keep it for parts on a similar unit

Or give a holler on this site: http://www.diyaudio.com/
They might be able to help you fix it.
Usually it involves replacing a chip/IC or two(may or may not be in DIP
sockets),and some FET's..
Of course,it could be something fairly simple...or a total basketcase.
If soldering isn't your forte,find a tech (there's a couple on DIYaudio
too.)

MTX has fixed repair rates, I think that amp costs about $65 with return
shipping included. Go to their website call them up as you will need a RMA
anyways.

Here so you dont get lost, 800-225-5689 and never mind the local MTX dealers.

Thanks Howdy, I did exactly that AND THEY DO have fixed repair rates. $95
Sounds like a deal to me as, again, the 801D would be PERFECT for my
application. I am going to drop it off today at an authorized MTX dealer
for repair.

Thanks Howdy,

Why shouldn't I mind the local MTX dealers? Just curious as I may be able
to save on shipping?

MTX DID give me that EXACT phone number to call in for an RA ID and get the
address as to where to send it. But it I could just drop it off at an
authorized dealer (like I used to do with my Fosgate amps) I thought I could
save on shipping.

What an I missing here?

Thanks again,

Just make sure that the amp ends up at the factory and not on some local hacks
test bench, differance being that the factory will not go replacing parts they
will replace the board and you'll end up with a new fully tested amp.

Ah, I see. That makes sense. Good advice. I like the sound of a new board
(basically a new amp). I think I WILL go that route if my local dealer uses
some kind of "local authorized MTX repair shop".

Thanks,
Nick

the only way one could do it on a fixed price basis and who has the
cheapest parts cost?

You sure ended up smelling like a rose bush. I bet the seller didn't
know all this good info!

This is common in the electronics industry. Assuming they don't do a direct
repair, it'll more likely be a rebuilt customer return and not a brand new
board. Your bad board would be repaired (at their leisure) and placed in
inventory for the next amp of the same model that comes through the repair
shop. Either way, you're much better off having it done directly by MTX than
a local shop. The factory can do a more thorough test of the board before
shipping the amp back.

If you wanted to check this, you could mark the side of the PCB with a
sharpie, and check for the mark when you get it returned. Don't mark the
surface as it'll just get washed off with defluxer after the repair.

When I lived in Chandler I often drove past MTX on the way to Jensen Tools
to get supplies. They were always hiring, and the place gave off the "crappy
place to work" type of vibe...

I'll do that for grins. I'm curious if they will replace the board.

I already called MTX today and got my RA number as I am just going to go
that route. Shipping it to them should only be about $20 and the $95
includes return shipping so THAT'S the way to go.

I think when all is said and done I'm going to come out ahead on this deal
as, like I said, I only paid $30 for the amp in the first place, another $20
(for shipping) and $95 for basically a new (or at least refurbished) 801 D
still puts me money ahead compared with a new or even a used model.

If you live in the phoenix metro area you can always take to MTX to get it
fixed. I have had friends do that. I dont know what they paid

Wish I did, that would save on shipping. I have their address and sure
enough, Phoenix is where MTX lives.
