So is the political reunification in Iraq the most important piece or
isn't it?
Is it the case that the military can provide security (such as it
is...) until the cows come home but that without Iraqi political
participation, it is fruitless long-term?
Or does your 'mind' (such as it is...) tell you something else?

I say no. Let the Kurds opt out and let the Shiites opt out. Better yet,
give the Kurds and the Sunnis weapons of mass destruction and have them
wipe out the Shiites. By the time they've toppled the ayatollahs in
Iran, the Western countries will be free of the petroleum habit and
Saudi Arabia will implode.

I'm sorry, George, but you're wrong. bushie has set his sites on a
stable and tolerable regime with current boundaries. Our whole "surge"
is to give a unified Iraqi government time to settle their
differences.
Therefore, in the current sceanario, improvements in the military
situation are relatively meaningless without political movement.
Balkanization, the most viable and likely course, is not on the table.
What will 2pid say now that it is possible/likely we have given the
Nation of Shia a lot of oil wealth?
Poor 2pid!
