Are they exiting the business? They used to have the ES series, that's
gone. Then they put the car audio lineup on Crutchfield, now that's gone.
Now, they have an Xplod site, but there is but so much on there. Are they
giving up?

I definitely think it is too early to say that Sony is exiting the car
audio business... seeing that they are starting to sell SACD head
units now and they just came out with their HD radio receiver
attachment. Maybe they are just changing the way they are doing
things and are getting ready to release a lot of new products.
I know for sure that Sony is not a little name in the car audio
business and they have quite a stance in it. And I know that they
have a lot of devoted fans who are faithful to buying their car audio
products. But I do think they need to move foward and build higher
quality products instead of low end cheap stuff. I think their head
units is their stronghold in the car audio business.

i have been in the electronics industry for almost half of my life.
about 8 years of that was installing car audio products.
at one point, sony did make a great product for car audio. it was
called Sony Mobile ES. when they did away with that lineup of
products, they turned into a product that was more about being flashy
than good.
they market their products well, they are cheap, and they look flashy.
these are reasons why they are still in business. you dont have to
make a good product to stay in business. just take a look at Bose if
you dont believe me. ;)
about the only thing i would purchase as far as sony car audio is
concerned, is their head units. amps, speakers, and subs? hell no, i
wouldnt put them in my vehicle if they were given to me.

I see, Sony hating just like Microsoft hating. People seem to hate the
#1's, just like the rest of the world hates the US for being #1 and the rest
of the US hates NYC for being number and the rest of NYC hates Manhattan for
being number one! If Sony's products sucked, they would be out of business

the top dog. I just put my order in for a Sony CDX-GT81UW receiver. It has

that was noisy and weak on the stations.

what specs are you talking about? they put a maximum power rating
right on the case of the amp. the max ratings are meaningless. there
are better amps out there for the money.
if i was concerned about radio reception, i would go with a pioneer
over any other brand of head unit.

Ok, speakers and subs I can understand, but the amps? Their amps sounded
good to me. Now I have an Infinity(6-channel) amp and I thinking about
going back to a Sony or something. Their amps and head units have specs
that are hard to beat. You would have to spend about $1,000 to get all of
those specs from other brands. Plus, the tuners are strong. Eclipse and
Alpine have weak tuners.

Well, the Sony is only 2nd to Pioneer in radio reception. I never go by
maximum power as it is not real world power. I go by the RMS which was I
think, 70x4. This was an older Xplod that I had. The one that looks like
the current marine one.

That is just too funny.Sony head units are okay while they work. Their amps
are nothing but trash right out of the box. A couple of years ago I had a sony
amp on my repair bench with a few blown mosfets, To make a long story short
when removing the mosfets the mainboard traces started to peel off the
mainboard. Not even Jensen or profile amps are built as poorly.

Well, their car audio is still in effect, but years ago they used to make
tons more. Their top 3 models are the only ones that even look good. I did
get mine and it's build quality (I have not installed yet, waiting on my HD
Radio tuner) is high quality to me. It is even superior to the JVC Arsenal
and Kenwood Excelon. It also looks high-tech, but simple. the S/N ratio is
the best without spending crazy amounts of money.

lol... you are comparing Sony to Microsoft... Microsoft is actually
worse than Sony, since Sony has more competition with other
companies. It's been proven that the more competition there is, the
better quality and lower price the products are.
I'm not saying that Sony's products completely suck... it's just that
a lot of products are cheap crap that go bad in like a year or two
after the warranty expires. Sony has some pretty good head units...
depending on what you get. I was actually looking in to their new
SACD head units... but I wouldn't recommend buying their amps, subs,
or speakers for that matter.

Wrong, Sony's tuners are average at best. I had a cheap old VR3...
and the reception from that head unit gave me 3 times stronger
reception than the Sony one I have now. Sony's CD sound quality is
good from their headunits, but still you can get better for the
price.

You are just hating or you don't know how to care of you stuff. I have a
minidisc (home deck) that I had since 1999. It survived a fire an water
damage and it is still ticking. Only the remote could not be revived. The
same for a Sony ES receiver I had. Those were the last Sony products I
bought until this head unit and the new Blu Ray player. I prefer Panasonic
in digital video, but they were late in coming out with theirs.
All things break if you don't know how to take care of them. Some people
don't change the oil in their cars. Some people don't clean their homes.
Some people don't wash their asses. If you are like that, then you should
expect things to break.

I am just going by the specs. I have not installed it but I will tomorrow.
Then again, the HD Radio tuner will be doing the work so I will never know.
I live in CT so I get a great deal of radio stations from NYC, LI, NJ and as
far up as Hartford. So I have a lot to choose from. This is why I prefer
to have a good tuner. The JVC Arsenal tuner was worst than what I had in my
stock 2005 Accord! I just don't expect things like that. All but one of my
stations is in HD.
Cheap people buy cheap head units, but people who want quality or who think
that they are buying quality go for Alpines, Pioneers and sometimes Eclipse.
I turned some onto JVC, now I have turned myself away from them. I wanted
HD Radio, plus high end features. This was the best combo I could come up
with.

If you buy a crappy product, it doesn't matter how well you take care
of it... it sucks. You might as well throw it away in the garbage.
If you have anything Sony in car audio, I would suggest you throw it
away or sell it some other fool (with the exception of their head
units). Sony's speakers are junk, subs are junk, amps are junk....
ultimate trash, you'll go broke buying their products and in the end
you feel like you have been jipped.

Actually, I installed and I am very happy with the sound and the looks. The
quality is on point. The sound is very clear and robust. I thought the
remote would be corny, but it is more comfortable than the JVC's. I am
satisfied. Now the HD Radio tuner is another thing. I am not exactly
hearing CD quality sound on the FM and FM quality sound on the AM. In fact,
I could not find an HD AM station. I may return that. I do like the
station ID, song/artist display...

I really don't give a rat's rectum if sony is number 32... they have a
verifiable track record of deliberately trashing their customers' equipment
to protect their already obscene profits. Why would anyone want to buy meat
for double its value from a butcher who has been proven to intentionally
poison his products?
You're correct, there are better manufacturers out there and intelligent
buyers will use them. It is only consumer ignorance that keeps sony in
business.

Nah, it's people like who have hate for companies that know what they are
doing. Stop the hate and accept what is. I like my head unit. It make may
songs sound like they should. Start forming a line to hate for HD Radio and
I can join you on that one!

You seriously don't get me at all. I don't hate Sony, I just hate
Sony's car audio speakers, subs, and amps; they suck. I like Sony's
head units, Sony's SACD, and Sony's professional studio headphones.
Sony has some good stuff, and really bad stuff. It all depends on
what you get.
You can buy all of Sony's junk crap car speakers if you want, but I
would choose something else. I'm just giving you my opinion. Take it
or leave it.

Oh. I know their speakers suck (home or car). I have Kappas for my
speakers. As for the head unit, I love it more everyday. The sound is
right and so are the looks.

If sony made the best products in the world, I would never buy them. I don't
"hate" them... they hate me and every one who buys their products. They
proved that with rootkit.
They don't deserve one penny of our money.

Politics. I loved every Sony product I ever had except a $200 Walkman I had
in the early 90's that broke rather early. They supposedly fixed it via
their warranty, but it was back to the same thing after a minute of play.
