View Full Version : amp question guys
O.K. I have a 1600W audiobahn amp mono ch. 800Wrms @ 2 ohm. I have 3
alpine R subs dvc 4ohms per coil. What would be the best way to wire
these up? coils in series 8 ohms and all subs parreled would be about
2.7 ohms. Would this be o.k ? or would i be better off wiring up 1 sub
@2ohms and selling the other 2?

Depends on if you need the cash or the space. For the most part, the more drivers,
the higher the efficiency, less distortion, more SPL.
3 @ 2.7 ohms sounds like a winner to me. A lot of SPL and not a bad load.

The subs are rated 500W rms and the amp at 3ohms would be like 600W
rms. is 200W a peice enough power? or is 800Wrms to one sub too much?

Yeah 800Wrms from a dirty audiobahn amp would be too much. Pitch the amp and
get something that will run happy at 1ohm.

What's he gonna do with a 1ohm stable amp? 6 4ohm VC's all
parallel'ed together will be .6666667 ohms, so even 1 ohm stable won't
be low enough. His other alternative is to wire series/parallel like
he said in the OP for a 2.66667 ohm final load, which is his best
option IMO.
2.66666 is low enough to suck a lot of juice out of the amp, about 200
RMS each is probably about right. Even tho his subs take more,
they'll be plenty loud on 200 RMS.. Upgrade the amp later if you
really want to something that doesn 1500-2000 RMS @ 2 ohms.
With 3 drivers, it's impossible to fully utilize the amp because you
can't wire em to 2 ohms. If you only used 2 subs, you could get it to
2ohms exactly with 400 RMS to each one, but I think 3 subs @ 200 RMS
will be louder than 2 subs @ 400 RMS. I'd definately use one of these
2 options. If space is an issue, I might go with 2, otherwise I'd try
all 3.
If you add a 4th sub you'll definately want a different amp (or
another identical amp), because you'll end up with 2x 2ohm loads, or
1x 4 ohm load, or 1x 1ohm load. THEN a 1ohm stable amp would be
great, otherwise no. A really really big 1ohm amp.. I don't konw how
easy it is to find a good powerful 1ohm amp, I haven't been in the
market for a new amp in 10 years (kickers last forever!).

Enough power is a funny question, but 3@200 will be much louder than
1@800.

It even make a bigger difference once the voice coil heats up and the ohms soars,
loosing about 3 dB before final meltdown.
