I had the same thought. Music moved from the listening room to the
belt and
owners of hi-fis appeared kind of silly to many when a walkman sounded
so good.

The ability to listen to portable music went from a transistor radio
or an open car door (with programming by somebody else) to Walkmans or
boom boxes.

I'll bet many Walkman owners had matching Sony rack systems. The left
speaker was behind the coat rack, and the right one was behind an
overstuffed chair. Most people did/do not have a "listening room."
They have a stereo in the living room, next to the TV. Now many have
iPods with docking stations.
