View Full Version : Good value 2 channel amp?

This is a repost of something I posted almost a year ago but never
bought anything but I'm definitely in the market now and so I wanted to
gather some more opinions.
I bought a very cheap head unit for my second car and I have found that
it's internal amp is not nearly powerful enough for my tastes, so I
would like to add an external 2 channel amplifier. I don't need
anything fancy or overly powerful...35 clean watts per channel or so
would be fine and line inputs that would work well with the 2 volt line
outs of the head unit. Under $100 would be ideal.
Thanks!

Hi Bob. You certainly have lots of alternatives, but for your budget, I
might suggest an older "PAxxx" or "REMxxx" or etc. Planet Audio
amplifier that hasn't been abused.
You can easily meet or beat your $100 budget; that's eBay pricing of
course.

Thanks Marty. I see some VX series Planet Audio amps on ebay now...I
presume they are the newer models. Are they any good or has their line
gone downhill like many other amp makers?

Thanks everyone for your responses. I ended up buying a refurbished US
Acoustics USX 2080 amp for $60 + shipping and tax from what appears to
be a very reputable guy on eBay. Seemed like a good deal on an older
US made amp.

I'm going to buy a 100Wx2 @ 4 ohms 2-channel Profile AP600 for my 200
Watt RMS 6x9's at cructchfield for $109.99 with a 3 year warranty... I
can't get that type of coverage on ebay.

Very true. I too was looking at the Profile line thru Crutchfield, but
several people convinced me that buying an amp made in the USA would
give me better sound quality, so I went that way instead. Only time
will tell if I made the right choice.

I wouldn't really go by where it is made at... I would go by the brand
name... is it a good brand? (when I say good, I mean 'does it do the
job?') Profile amps are made in the USA anyways i think. Buying an
amp just because it is made in the USA is a bad shopping ethic. There
are many other factors to consider like: sound quality, looks,
wattage, s/n ratio, weight, heating issues, connection type (gold-
plated?), etc...
For sound quality wise, I would think the brand of head unit is more
important than the brand of the amp. All long as the amp performs how
it should perform and has a good S/N ratio and is reliable, I don't
really see a problem with buying non-brand name.
