advice on buying a dual channel pre-amp for around to $2000?

I'm building a home studio from scratch and don't really know alot
about pre-amps. There are a few that have interested me such as the
Universal Audio 2-610 and the focusrite red 8, does any-one have
opinions on these products? I'm looking for one around the $2000 price
range. I will be using a neuman tlm-103 and also a stereo pair of
Neuman skm184 's along with the usual sm57's and such. the interface
I'm planning on getting is the RME fireface 800 and I'm running it all
through a mac-pro desk-top. Any help would be appreciated.

Both have excellent reputations; I can testify that the Universal Audio
lives up to theirs. It also seems to be very well built, and should hold up
for a long time. Another in that price range to listen to is the Great River
MP2, the original rather than the -NV model. Also consider Millennia Media.

You mention everything except what you're recording and why.

If you don't have a console and you're doing everything with a single
preamp, you're probably better off getting the most neutral-sounding
preamp you can.

I will be recording pretty much everything. from folk to electronic to
metal mostly just for fun and recording stuff my band does. why would
I need a console? ( That's probably a dumb question but I don't
really have any legit experience with any legit recording equipment so
give me a break...)

In that case, why spend $2,000 on a mic preamp? You might be quite
happy with something interesting, well designed, and more modest, and
get more mileage out of your money by buying a couple of different
microphones. That's where the real color and versatility lies.

Control . . . of your signal flow and your sanity. Don't go into this
ignorantly. Read a good book. Here's one that's free if you have
patience or not too expensive if you want a real book to take to the

Your Fireface 800 will come with four channels of mic pre. Spend the
$2K on room treatment and monitors.

Start off by recording 4 mics through the perfectly good preamps on
the Firewire 800. Tell us what, if anything, you dislike about the
result. Then we can suggest other preamps.

Much more important, what are you using as monitors? And does the
room you're mixing in sound good?

D&R makes a 2-channel preamp that is the exact same input
stage as on their consoles. They have dealers in all corners,
so you don't have to hassle with international transactionation.

It is also much, much less than $2k.

I know the preamps on the fireface are perfectly good but I need more
than 4 channels for recording drums. And I just thought It would be
good to have a really nice dual-channel pre-amp to run my stereo pair
through.

I'm torn between the dynaudio Bm 5a and the JBL LSR4326P Pak. any
advice on either of them?

The room I'm mixing/tracking in will hopefully sound good. It is 12' x
18' 9" but is unfortunately made out of concrete so I'm really not to
sure how it is going to turn out. I'm planning on covering the walls
with acoustic treatment carpet and I'm buying 32 - 1' x 1' x 2" panels
of auralex studiofoam, 24- 1' x 1' x 2" panels of auralex wedgies, 12
panels of 2' x 4 auralex 422 foam, 4 lenrd bass traps, and I have some
really nice bass traps that I got for free. feedback on that?

Also, which console would best fit my needs?

I couldn't agree more. If you don't mind used, a 4 channel GML just
went for $1800 on eBay. But a new warrantied 2 channel is within your
budget.
