View Full Version : Electrical problem while installing deck

I was trading out a crappy old Dual head for a JVC KD-G420.
Reconnected all the wires, plugged everything in. Turned it on, sounds
great. So I then unplugged everything so that I could take the mount
off, put it on the dash kit, yadda yadda. Plugged everything in after
that, nothing comes on. Tried reseting the deck, no help.

I then noticed that when I turned the ignition to accessories, nothing
comes on at all in the car. Nothing will work unless I turn the
ignition to the on position. Lights, locks, nothing. And even in the
on position, the deck still doesn't turn on.

Any thoughts on this? I checked the fuses for interior lights, gauges,
and radio. They were all fine.

check to see that all your power wires from your radio are isolated
from one another. You might have created a short by accidentally
leaving one of the positive wires touch the "ground" wire and
therefore broke a fuse. Once you break a fuse, no current is allowed
through. One thing I know for sure is you are not getting any current
to your head unit or interior lights, which is most likely a broken
fuse. You should do a "continuity" check (with an ohmmeter) for all
the fuses in the fuse box in your car, unless you did it already.
Just looking at a fuse can be decieving sometimes. Also, there should
be a fuse on the back of your head unit, check that also. If you have
a car manual, look at the electrical diagram and see what fuses are
connected with the radio.

There are two positive power source wires that come out from the head
unit. One is for power when the ignition is off, and one is for power
when the ignition is on. The other power wire is your negative
"ground" wire. Check those wires to see if they are securely
connected (three power wires altogether). If your radio circuitry is
somehow connected to your interior lights and power locks, then most
likely you created a short when installing it and therefore blew a
fuse or did some other damage to some switch, which caused infinite
resistance and therefore no current is allowed through. Most likely
it is a fuse, because that's what fuses are for. When you install the
head unit, make sure your key is not in the ignition. If your key is
in the ignition, you could be getting unwanted voltage during the
installation process. A safe procedure is to disconnect the negative
terminal of your battery and then install it. After it is installed,
reconnect the negative terminal to your battery. Your manual for your
head unit should already tell you this... i'm just giving you a
reminder.

I don't know if you know anything about electronics, but since you
were asking for help I assumed you didn't know much.
