View Full Version : Samplitude Recording Software

I've been using Samplitude for recording and mastering for years. I haven't
up dated in many years and currently have V5.8 or so. I just built a new
computer and now is the time to make a switch or not - Samplitude will let
me upgrade for $400 to V9 or I can go with protools. Any input - how would
an old Samplitude user get along with Protools and I hate to ask, but, which
is better? I may just sell my Samplitude CDs and key - this is OK with
Samplitude as their key system only lets you install it on one computer at a
time. Anyone interested in purchasing this please respond here. Thanks

Thanks for this information - I've always thought Samplitude was ahead of
its time, but I've been out of digital recording for several years and
during this time ProTools seems to have taken over. I'm tempted to try to
just re-install my old version 5.8 because it did everything I needed at the
time ...... Thanks again.

about a year ago i got rid of all my protools gear. the 001 hardware
and version 5 or 6 software i think.
the decision for me came down to being able to use whatever hardware i
wanted to (i feel the RME stuff is much better). i never thought the
001 sounded good. my hunch, cheap converters. i also wasn't sure the
math involved in the software was all that great. my mixes sound
worlds different from a protools HD mix. same source material, same
room, different version of protools hardware and software.
i spent a lot of time asking questions and looking around and
samplitude gets very high marks for sonic quality and some of its
guiding design ideas such as an object oriented approach.
the biggest complaint i hear about sam is that the interface has a
steap curve. but you're already familiar so no big deal. the other one
is nobody uses it. so unlike protools you can't go into just about any
pro studio and have someone else mix your recordings.
on the plus side the new versions of sam seem to be a much fuller/
complete package then protools. sam comes with a bunch of convolution
reverbs, good sounding eqs and compressors. with protools you still
need to buy the good stuff separate. at least i did in the older
version. and sam is more integrated. you can go from tracking to
mixing, mastering, and burning a cd without leaving the program.

I've been using Samp since v2.53 and I'm still using v6.05 which I upgraded
to in 2002. Does pretty well everything - and does it well.

Many thanks for all the replies. It sounds like Samplitude is still an
excellent package so I bit the bullet and ordered the upgrade to Version 9.
I'll probably try to sell my version 5.9 to recoup some of the costs -
anyone want an oooollllddddd, but still usable copy, cheap? Since I had a
series of contacts with Samplitude they didn't ask me to send in my old
version nor did I give them the registration code when I upgraded, so it can
still be used to get the upgrade to version 9 for $400. Thanks again - this
is a good group.

i heard synthax was getting in crossgrades for $399 for sam 9 pro in a
week or two. i thought that i needed an older version of sam or proof
of another program to do a crossgrade but apparently not according to
synthax. so i'm waiting for those to come in. basically save $200.
doesn't make a whole lot of sense to me but i'm willing to wait a week
or two and see if dreams come true.

Sounds like a great deal - good luck with the upgrade. We can compare
notes on Samp V9 when we both have it installed. It will be interesting to
see how much of a learning curve I'll have after becoming fairly adept with
the older versions. Take care.

there is a google group called samplitude but the activity and
membership is super low. guess i'll have to wait to register it and
get in with the sam community. but yeah, i'd be into sharing info.
while we're here let me ask a question i've posed before and never
gotten a good response to. is there a way to auto select a transient?
in other words, you have the playback head in a chunk of audio, hit a
certain key, and the head automatically finds the next say snare hit.
one thing i miss about protools.

Hey Cporro
I've been out of the Samplitude loop for several years and I can't answer
this off the top of my head. When I get my upgrade installed, I'll try to
respond. Maybe we can keep a Samplitude thread going here, as I'm sure were
are not the only Samp users in this group.
Happy recording
