Dear tia mcnewsxp,

Your first choice is correct, The mic needs to be boosted up to line
level in order for the gate to have enough signal to gate.

Why are you gating, tia? And is mcnewsxp an Irish name?

The gate wants to see a line level signal, so you want to put it after
the preamp.

However, if you are using a DAW, why would you want a hardware gate at all?

Do you have an outboard one that's better?

The DAW way to do this is to record the drums without gating, then use
the DAW editor to mute or reduce the volume of the leakage IF AND ONLY
IF IT'S A PROBLEM. The risk with gating drums when you record is that
you might gate out a desired hit. That sucks.

don't know if what i have is better yet.
i'm only concerned with bleed on the tom mics.
i have been erasing all the unwanted sound.
i'm going to try using..............[drum roll]...........a behringer
multigate.....

Sounds OK to me if you take the time to get the threshold and release
set properly.

On drums, leakage is often a good thing.

Unless the drummer sucks or the kit sucks or the room sucks or the mics
suck or some combination thereof.

Still, if I could record at 24 bits, I'd be more inclined to clean it up
afterwards rather than gating on the way in.

Don't gate it if it don't sound good, slappy.

Use your ears...do whatever sounds good.

Hey try this- bugger the toms...use some nice overheads.

Hey or don't bugger them and gate 'em. Certain drum sounds can
benefit by gating.

Or at any rate, let him try it both ways.

It seems like he's already been trying it without a gate and seems to
think he needs one for some reason. In which case I say gate away.

right
i've tried not gating
i've tried using the DAW's gate while recording and after.
tried just using overheads.
not the tom sound i am looking for....yet.
