View Full Version : Windows XP Audio: Loudness problem

January 29th 07, 08:45 PM
Hello all,

Is there a way to have the PCM sound output from my PC to have the
same level of "loudness" without regard to the source where the sound
is coming from?

I ask this as my system volume control (for PCM/WAV) widely varies for
different applications. My TV out volume (which uses the same WAV out
as my system sounds) is very low, so whenever I watch TV, I have to
turn up the volume, and if I forget to turn it back down, then I often
startle my wife with thunderous system sounds.

I have a ASUS K8V motherboard with integrated sound, The TV sound feed
is through the line in from the ATI 9800 AIW Radeon Pro (which has a/v
capture capabilities) Im running Win XP Pro

Any suggestions is much appreciated

Thanks

Note: I tried installing AC3 filter and fiddled with Automatic Gain
Control and Dynamic Range Compression settings, but it seem to only
work on the Windows Media Player application, not on TV

Have you checked if your TV hardware/software has a
volume control of its own?

Thats because ac3filter is a software decoder used to decode audio
between your media player (wmp, winamp etc) and your sound card.

The AIW Pro decodes the TV signal sound itself with the onboard chipset.

There should be a cable running from your AIW pro to and input on your
soundcard inside your pc.

This means that the level of the AIW pro is controlled by the software
mixer controlling your soundcard.

Go to start -> run -> type 'sndvol32' (without hypens) and press enter.

Go to options -> properties and make sure all the controls are checked.

Press ok.

One of those sliders should control the output level of the AIW Pro.
Probably labelled line in or something like that.

'Wave' controls the level of sound being decoded or played back through
the internal soundcard bus.

Adjust said levels until you are happy.
