View Full Version : Need help sampling / isolating instrument from CD

I am curious whether it is possible to isolate a single instrument
from a CD track using Adobe Audition. If so, how would I do this?
My friend wants to do a cover of The Who's song "Baba O'Riley," and
would like to have an audio track with just the synth part of the
song. I listened to the song, and the first 40 seconds of it are
synthesizer before other instruments kick in.
I know I could create samples from the first 40 seconds of the song,
and then just creatively loop them to create an approximation of the
synth part of the song (I have done this before), but the situation
has left me curious as to whether or not it is possible to simply
extract the synth part from the song so that other instruments can't
be heard.
Thank you for any help you can give me.

Not really.

Okay, so you can cut out that 40 seconds.
You can also do the usual differential channel trick to kill everything
in the center of the image. This may cause lead guitar and vocals to
drop out completely. But beyond that, you're on your own.

Nope. There's no magic available. Well, you can hire someone to
transcribe the original part and play it for you. That's not magic,
but it IS effective.

Only using the CSI Lab on TV.

If its any help to your friend, that distinctive "sequence" was a
built-in effect in the '60s Lowrey organ used on the piece.
From thewho.net:
"Itšs hard to believe that the sound we hear on Baba OšRiley is really a
Lowrey home organ. The model Pete used was a TBO-1, but for anyone
wishing to recreate Baba OšRiley, just pick one up the following models
to do the same job: TLO, DSO, TLS, TSO 25 and HR and GAK (seems to be
the nearest). Pete is using a setting called 'marimba repeat.'"

Interesting choice of words. I've never before heard the word
"creatively" used to describe plagiarism. Maybe I'm just getting old.

C'mon. Give the guy a break. He did not say he was passing the song on
as his own without getting proper clearances for the prior art...

Without access to the studio multitrack tape you cannot do this.
You could try EQing everything else out, but the concept is doomed to be a
failure. Just find a MIDI file of the song.

Are you suggesting that Behringer equipment is only
good for movie props? :-)

It's close, for about twelve beats. I think Younker needs to listen
again.

I'm sure I saw a DSP8024 in some TV fiction and I think it was CSI.
Surely the silver color is cool to see on TV.... More than any GML pre...
And nicer than
And a lot cheaper...
