She starts to sing about 1/2 way through. She didn't know her mic was
on :-) Bad lesson to learn the hard way!

That was painful to watch. I don't dislike her more than I do any
other polititian in particular, but man, that was a bad call going for
that one.

Maybe a little autotune?

Some sound guy was not on his toes. This is live sound 101 - mute the mics
of people who shouldn't sing solos during group sing-alongs.

She didn't get all the words right - she didn't sing the whole song!

Note the approach of a skilled politician - she only sang the words she
knew. ;-)

She only sang as the Color Guard approached... but you could be right.

Was it my imagination, or were there some horrible wrong notes in the
band as well?

It's not your imagination.

Was it a kid's band or something? I thought American marching bands
had a high standard?

I suspect so. Sounds like about high
school level to me.

> I thought American marching bands
> had a high standard?

No, they do not. Walking around with a wind instrument
is ludicrous at best. Now, at the college and pro level,
people figure it out but there's only so much you can
do. You have to be very strong to do it right.

The standard is pretty much put to the sword in service of
the band's primary role as time filler at football
games.

There be exceptions. Which are amazing.

I am pretty sure Sousa's guys sat, or stood still.

What was the lesson? That she couldn't sing?

I suspect that she knew that. Could you have done any better? As other
posters have suggested, this is just another case of CNN audio
incompetence...another mic left live when it shouldn't have been.

Nothing new....

I don't sing very well either, but I've been moved on more than one
occasion to sing the words when the Anthem was played in public. I'd
hate to see/hear recordings of those events played on YouTube with me as
the 'featured soloist'.

My teenage daughter--who sings much better than I--has sung it, solo, to
commence sporting events. She's hit a couple of clunkers on those
occasions; but got a respectful ovation for the effort.

I enjoyed it, I've heard lots of folks who couldn't sing 'go for it'
(unfortunatly, many in the studio) and I usually get a kick out of it.
I though she was cute and I had to smile.

....but, true, she's no Rosanne Barr.

Why was she miked ? (I couldn't watch more than a few minutes (too
close to dinner time for me)

No, she sang the words she thought she knew, and got one of the few
words she sang wrong.

I couldn't make it out, but did she sing '...*for* the land of the
free....'? That's a mistake I've heard so-called professionals make.

Another one I've heard (and pointed out, so that it got corrected the
next day) was '...through the perilous *night*....' That one opened a
convention of bureaucrats connected with the Veterans Administration.
They seemed not to notice, and gave the vocalist a loud, sustained,
standing 'O'.

FWIW, official lyrics here:

Yeah, that's pretty egregious. I've heard worse, though, from amateurs.
The examples I gave were from supposed professionals, singing solo for
a crowd...who *knew* they were being heard.

A few months ago, a news organization buttonholed members of Congress
coming out of the legislature. When asked to recite the words to the
Anthem, many came up short....

I'm with you and Chel on this one. Most of my smart friends and
relatives are pretty tone deaf, to be kind. And most of the ones who
can sing well enough can't hold their own in discourse with the first
group.

I'm cutting Hil slack on this one, and hope the media doesn't blow it
up.

It would be interesting to get a list of all the presidents and their
pros and cons in office, which noted whether or not they could hold a
tune.

Reagan once sang a snippet of "When Irish Eyes Are Smiling" fairly
well when he was telling an Irish joke. He didn't know the mic was
open either but at least it was not an "Iran Contra" type of
disaster.

Sounds like a high school band.

It may be a marching band, it may not be. But anyway, quality is
spotty, especially these days. Some are REALLY good, others are
terrible. This one sounds about average.

Sousa's USMC had to march a bit, but his own, private band which was
so very famous did no marching at all.
