View Full Version : Silver/Silver CD-R question (silver bottom)
January 27th 07, 04:50 PM
Hi everyone! I've been looking for some silver/silver CD-Rs. (I'll
be using thermal printing.) I understand that Taiyo Yuden is one of
the most respected manufacturers of CD-Rs, but do they make silver
bottom CD-Rs?
The only silver bottom CD-Rs I can find are from other manufacturers,
such as this:
http://www.cddimensions.com/cd-r_media/cdd-r80ss-cb.asp
And this:
http://www.cddimensions.com/cd-r_media/skc-r80ss-blk.asp
And also ProDisc, but I've heard horror stories about ProDisc.
(Deterioriation and errors after only two years??? Could that
possibly be true?)
Any thoughts?

They make one of the most respected formulas in the business...and
they make that way because it's proven to be reliable and cross compatible.
Maxell distributes a silver bottom CDR... you can't see the burn and coasters
are more frequent.

I use to get Ritek with the silver bottom and they actually were quite
reliable. They stopped making them. Prodisc may still make them. Their
discs were a bit below Ritek in reliability but still acceptable.
SKC's a little worse. They may still make them. I'm always confused by
the way they designate these. I see a lot that say Silver/Silver which
I thought to mean silver top and silver bottom but this doesn't seem
the case. The ones I use to get that were silver on the bottom were
called Diamond silver or something. But the normal ritek discs are
very light on the bottom. Not that far off from the top, just not that
heavy silver. Not sure about the Taiyo Yudens.

Which is more important? How the disc looks,
or whether copies work reliably?
The T-Ys that I use are silver with a slight greenish
tinge on the data side. But I don't buy them for their
looks. You apparently have different priorities?

If you want the best silver bottoms, use MAM 74's I get better reads
with these than any other disc I have ever used. Unfortunately, they
are expensive compared to the others. I always use them for masters
unless I have to exceed 74 minute burn length.
I also use a lot of the Taiyo Yuden With the greenish blue bottoms.
Very reliable.

I think it falls in right after "Loud." More important than you might
care to know depending on who it is for.

Here is another vote for T-Ys. Not only do they burn well with almost
no coasters and low BLER but they play in CD players of marginal
quality. I used to have good luck with Ritek and they still burn
reliably but now seem to be hit and miss with marginal players.

I think I've had this question before... and the reason was because with a
bright silver bottom, it's almost impossible to see the burn and people
can't readily observe that it's a CDR.

Correct. Appearance is far more important than reliability. It's an
ugly truth of the entertainment industry: image, image, image. Blue/
green CD-Rs are not as credible, or as cool, as silver, professionally
pressed CDs. If I could get silver bottoms on my CD-Rs to fool stupid
people...WHAT A WONDERFUL WORLD THIS WOULD BE.
I only need the reliability of your average consumer brand, which I
have *never* had a problem with. But if the horror stories about
ProDisc's fast deterioriation are true, then I'll have to go with
(SIGH)...quality....

Just for the record, I hate the loudness war too. Not as much as you
folks do, I'll bet, but still, it sucks.

And the "ProDisc deteriorates like hell within a couple of years" myth
is...just that? A myth? Hope so....

Don't count on long-term stability for ANY of the CD-Rs. You're going to
have to assume that they will ALL deteriorate like hell within a couple
years. Because some do, and some don't, and there isn't necessarily any
way to predict it.
