View Full Version : End of the line for Quantegy tape
January 22nd 07, 08:43 PM
I'm surprised this hasn't been posted here already. See announcement at
www.quantegy.com
I know some of you (Scott?) might say "good riddance", but I started my
recording career with *Ampex* (as it was called then) 456, I still use
it sometimes and I'm sorry to see it go.

I suppose you can move to Quantegy hard drives. (I doubt they have that
classic 456 sound, but who knows?) I would also have been sad to see
456 go if it hadn't caused me so much trouble in the longevity
department.
Anyone tried ATR Magnetics yet?

Sad to see anybody depart the business.
I can understand it though. I used to go through cases of tape and now
other than about 100 DAT tapes, some cassettes, and a few VHS's a year,
really don't use much.
I do however, still use my recorders for transferring tape to digital.

I am a little skeptical because I have seen the last two announcements
that Quantegy was shutting down production.
But, it's true that I have seen some weird things out of Quantegy, like
their moving into the 35mm magfilm market, and dropping 95A wideband
instrumentation tape, which lead me to believe the management doesn't
have a clue what they are doing.
>Anyone tried ATR Magnetics yet?
They have some beta test customers but I am not one of them. I _have_
tried RMGI tape, though, and I have only the best things to say about it.
Reportly Zonal is also in limited production.

Having had a Quantegy drive fail fatally after only a few months of
intermittent use I'm unconvinced.

Because January 18 was the date of the announcement but I guess like
all good software-based projects, it took more time than it should have
to get it posted to the web site. It wasn't there yesterday, so
somebody must have tipped you off. <g>

Scott, by the way, has a review of RMGI 468 in the current issue of
Recording.

Is it available online ? I sure would like to read it.

Bring back "Irish" tape, I say! ;)

you remember Shamrock tape?

Actually, that was meant as a joking reference to the cheap-cheap-cheap
"Irish" brand cassette tapes sold in three-packs (without Norelco
boxes!) back in the '70s. I doubt they had any affiliation to the
Opelika company, but don't know that for a fact.

No, but most Borders and Barnes & Noble stores have it. It's the February
issue.

It is not available online, however your local Barnes and Noble will sell
you a copy, as will Guitar Center.
Basic summary: you can splice a short length of the RMGI 468 into a
reel of BASF 468 and get away with it. That's impressive.

The Orradio facility that made Irish tape was bought out by Ampex, which
split it off to Quantegy as part payment for debts.
It is in fact the Irish tape facility that is being closed down right now.

Bet you're talking about SHamrock.
THe IOwa library for the blind used to record a lot of books
on that tape, as well as their generic white cassette tapes
with no boxes. THey used to sell me cassettes for like
$0.25 or something amazingly cheap, which I"d use to give
clients cassette dupes.
I also bought their reels of tape at like $1.50 for a seven
inch reel, I'd use them for quarter track recodings of
albums i borrowed from friends. IN fact, my old collections
of Cream; MOody BLues; Savoy Brown, HOt TUna and JEff
Airplane were all on those, as well as Neil YOung and all
his permutations up through about 1980.

Amazing how much tape is on a 10" reel when it's not.

Allowing for inflation, Quantegy's 406 is cheaper than that. A 7-inch reel
of 406 is going for $3.26 until the supply runs out.

Hey, look what I found in my archives:

This is from the early or mid '50s.

I've got a reel of Irish brand tape where the Shamrock design is cut out
of the reel sides. The recording on that reel is the broadcast of Van
Cliburns Carnagie Hall performance on May 28, 1958.

Oooh! That's exciting. BASF 468 is my all-time favorite tape for my
1" machine. I bought almost 100 reels of the stuff brand new from one
of the UC schools that was going digital... most of it is long gone,
in old client's closets, but I still have a few reels in my personal
stash!
It has a real sweetness to it, whereas I hear a little crunch with
456.
Is RMGI making 1"?

Try running 456 at lower operating levels. I think Ampex's recommendation
is way too high.
>Is RMGI making 1"?
They say they will be, although it is backordered right now. However, if
you use a lot of 1" you should contact Zonal. They apparently have a huge
amount of 675 in 1" that is left over from the original British production
that they were trying to get rid of this past spring. I think it's nice
tape although it never caught on in the US.
