Looks like 3 companys have stepped up with iPod recording accessories.
This got me thinking that the other portable media players ( Creative
etc) might be better & cheaper platforms to base field recorders on.
Apple has a propietary id code which the accessory must give the iPod
before it will go into "voice recorder" mode. This requires the vendor
to be "approved " and recieve an ID before product release if they hope
to be used with new Gen iPods. ITunes is a big part of iPods success
but for a field recorder it offers no benefit? personally I like the
Creative Zen interface / PC tools and could see it as a recorder file
manager.

The secret(?) code has been cracked/hacked for previous
generations (see www.ipodlinux.org, etc.) I assume that it
is only a matter of time before someone will publish the 5G
codes.

Some of those players had a reputation for also doing recording
reasonably well, but none that are currently in production AFAIK.
Apparently we are not a big enough market for any of the big
(or mid-size) consumer vendors to see a viable market?

I notice that the latest Creative Zen Vision:M 60GB model has USB host
capability. This opens a world of options. Conceivably I could
connect it to my Tascam US122 for example (via a battery powered hub.)
I hope this capability actually is exploitable by third parties.

The iRiver H10 has a recording mode, but unfortunately only with the
built in mic. The old H40 had a full set of ins and outs so apparently
they're reducing functonality. Dunno why...
