View Full Version : Edirol R09--failed attempt to record from Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro

Using a RCA Y connector, I went from Tape Out on a Mackie 1402 VLZ Pro
mixer to Line In of my Edirol R09, put the R09 on Record Standby, and
was unable to get any reading on the R09 level indicators. I had the
Input Level on the R09 set at 26 (out of maximum 30).
I went from LIne Out on my cassette deck to Line In on the R09 and was
able to record successfully.
The Mackie manual says that the Main Mix fader controls level of signal
sent to Tape Out. I did not see what the setting was for the Main Mix
fader, but the sound system was on and a performance was underway.
Will appreciate suggestions as to how I can record from this mixer with
my R09. Thanks.

It does. It is essentially the same signal as the main outs. If
you are sending a signal into one of the channels, and that channel
is selected for main input (not Alt 3/4) and the fader is up and
you are getting no signal from the tape outs, then the mixer may
be broken. Do you get anything from the main 1/4" outs? I would
go out that way anyway, because I think it bypasses a final gain
stage that they put on the tape outs.

Was the Y connector any good? Was the tape out active?
When this happens, stick a headphone into the tape out jack and see if
you hear anything. If you hear something, it's after that point. If you
d>on't, it's before that point.
Why did you use a Y connector?

Did you use the same Y connector between the cassette deck and the R09?

That's important information.

Get signal out the tape out, plug the tape out into the R09. If the guy
mixing wasn't using the R-L buss, you won't get any signal out the tape
outs.

Not certain about that specific model, but on most similar Mackies you
have to be careful that the right routing buttons by the master on the
front (which are hard to see if they're engaged, much less what they
mean by doing what they do) are pushed in. And seeing level might not
mean it's the level going to what you're plugged into.

Did you use the same cable to connect to the Mackie mixer as to the
cassette deck? And why an RCA Y connector? Is that your way of
describing a cable with a mini stereo phone plug on one end and two RCA
plugs on the other? That should work, and the output of the mixer,
assuming you have an indication on its meters, should be essentially
the same as the cassette deck.
I think it's operator error. Call the operator.

The Mackie mixer Tape Out level is -10dBV consumer line level. The
Edirol R-09 specs on their website says its nominal Line In level is
0dBU. So you have an 8dBU level mismatch right there.

Those control what the 'control room' hears on his model. He was
going out the 'tape outs' which mirror the main mix, which is fed
right from the channel faders.

Yes, same cable to connect mixer unsuccessfully and deck successfully.
Yes, that is what I meant by RCA Y connector. Sorry for nonstandard
terminology.
Why did I use Y connector? Because I had two mixer outputs and one
recorder input; did not see anything else to do.
I gave a summary of this group's suggestions to the guy running the
mixer and he was able to fix whatever was wrong. I am not sure just
what moves he made. Thanks for all help and information.
Another problem arose and I shall describe it in another post and hope
for your patience.
