My stepson inherited a Panasonic CD-DRX900U in dash unit when he got
his used pickup. You can see where there was an amplifier at one time
and a bundle of wires left behind. He wanted to simply connect the
truck's 4 existing speakers to the unit.

This unit has a small "center" speaker on the face of the unit that
sounds like an old transistor radio speaker. I downloaded the manual
from Panasonic which was pretty worthless.

Here's what we ran into. There is a subwoofer "out" cable w/ a female
RCA plug, and a Front and Rear "out" cable, both with two wires with
female RCA plugs. The manual just shows that these Front and Rear are
Front L/R and Rear L/R preamp out. It shows a preamp inline and then
the speakers on the drawing.

We tried to just connect the speakers to those Front and Rear lines but
get no sound. I'm pretty old school on these systems so am I correct
in assuming that there are no actual speaker connections on the unit
itself? Do we have to go thru a preamp or amplifier and then to the
speakers to get any sound?

Like I said this unit was in the truck with noting but a bunch of wires
that had been cut and left behind and we're not sure exactly what we
need to do here.

Any help will be greatly appreciated!

right, there is no built-in amplifier. those plugs you tried to hook
the speakers to are the RCA outputs, you'll have to hook those to an
external amplifier. so you can basically think of this unit as a
preamp.

The only built-in amp that HU has is for the center channel speaker. It
does indeed require an external amp for the front/rear/subs.
