I'm interested in just a less expensive amp & speakers that I can hook up to
the DVD player and TV in the bedroom, but everyone seems to make only units
that have receivers and Cd players in them too. Does anyone make JUST what
I'm looking for?

Yes but, generally, not inexpensively. The cheaper products are
driven by large market demand which, for good or ill, specifies
completeness. Get one with a receiver (it only adds a few $$ to the
price) and don't switch it on.

I think you mean the all in one HT in a box come with a DVD player
built in. Most do.

There are less expensive options that don't come with a player. Look
for inexpensive separates, like the entry level Sony, Aiwa and Pioneer
digital receivers and a set of 5.1 speakers, like the KLH starter set.

If you are looking at the really low end, as I am, I doubt that there
are less expensive options. I found an HT-in-a-box for $99 at Best Buy
and Circuit City. I really only wanted speakers+amp+Dolby, but all
the systems I found without dvd-player were substantially more expensive.
It doesn't seem that adding a dvd-player should reduce the price, but
it does. At the bottom, anyway.

Radio Shack, department stores that still have electronics, like Sears
and consumer electronics "big box" stores like Best Buy and Circuit
City.

I agree with you. This is one of the oddities of the marketplace and
supply and demand. Just like years ago when phono cartridges were the
same price or cheaper than their replacement styluses.

I expect the original poster is looking at spending $300-500 for new
separates, whereas a new low end HT in a box may be a lot cheaper.
