Why do they sell monitors with speakers and sound cards with no
amplifier? How do they expect you to deal with this? Now for the 2nd
time I am faced with this. I just bought a monitor with speakers for a
G4 Mac. The Mac has a sound card output at line level (can power
headphones). I need an amplifier, but I don';t want to purchase some
big thing, just enough for sound that will be better than I will get if
I plug the speakers into the headphone output. I had that for about 4
years on my PC and "endured" it.

Is there an amp for this purpose?

The monitor's speakers have a builtin LOW POWER amplifier for driving them
from a line level sound card output. You CANNOT use an external amplifier
with your setup, it would be of no use.
