I have a 1978 Chevy truck. The design goals of the system is a nice
full range balanced sound.
My system consists of these components at the moment:
Sony CD Player with 3 pre-outs, 7 band EQ, built in crossovers
JBL 5 1/4 inch speakers in the kick panels, crossed over at 250Hz
HiFonics Pluto 35Wx2 amp that will be powering the 5 1/4 kick panel
speakers
What is the recommendation for subwoofer(s) ? About all I can put
behind the seat is the typical sealed wedge truck box. The jack and
tools have to fit behind the seat as well.
The goals for the bass end of the system is good low end extension that
smoothly fills the cabin, headroom for a little extra volume for
driving with the windows down, and good low mids and mids to reproduce
bass guitar and kick drum detail.
The subwoofer combinations i've considered are one 8 inch, two 8 inch,
or one 10 inch. The reason for considering the 8's is that I listen to
a lot of rock music and I like to hear the detail of the bass guitar.
I've also realized though, with the 8's and them being crossed over to
produce that much midbass and them being right behind the seat, it
going to have that "getting punched in the back" effect since it's not
like a car where they can be placed in the trunk, and they would be
quite harsh.
Then I started to consider a single 10. If I crossed it over at a point
where it would be providing smooth low end and not so much mid bass,
the cabin would be filled nicely with bass without being harsh or
annoying. The downside of this is that it leaves out the midbass. I was
considering a pair of 6x9's in boxes crossed over for midbass behind
the seat as well, although this means another pair of speakers and
another amp.
With the goals I have in mind, which subwoofer is going to be the best
bet ? I'm alright with adding midbass speakers in the back later on if
they are needed.
