View Full Version : Low Cost System
Please help me put together a low cost stereo system. It will be for
music only. I am considering the Sony SS-MB350H speakers, either 2 or 4
of them. How much will I need to spend for a decent system? Maybe a
subwoofer and receiver to go with the speakers? The listening room will
not be too big. Maybe 20' x 20'. Thanks!

Why 4? Do you own a bunch of quad LPs from the 70's?
Two $200 speakers will sound better than Four $100 speakers.
>How much will I need to spend for a decent system?
Depends. Are you willing to go used? You can save a bundle there, and
a $200 used speaker will usually sound far superior to a new $400
speaker. Finding the quality used stuff can be an issue, but it's
there. It's what I'd recommend for those on a serious budget.
> Maybe a subwoofer and receiver to go with the speakers?
You'll need some kind of amplifier, so a receiver would be a viable
option.
A subwoofer is an option that you can add later. My strong prerence is
for natural sounding speakers that only go down to 80 hz over mediocre
speakers with a sub that extends down to 40.

Good advice.
Subs are over-rated if your main speakers are decent IMHO. Good for sound FX
and not much more.

I can't be much specific help with retail outlets but let's start with what kit
you want in this system.
Tuner / CD / amplifier + speakers ?
Budget ?
20' x 20' is a biggish room by European standards btw.

So I could use these as computer speakers as they come new? If so that
sounds good : )

Yes, you could. And I'd recommend powerd studio monitors over computers
speakers any day. (Can't speak for this specific model...)
The boxen sold as "computer speakers" are uniformly awful. However,
they are so low fi that they cover up some of the flaws in the sounds
eminating from your computer. You may find that real speakers sound
worse with the computer bleeps and bloops because they reproduce them
more accurately.

That depends on what type (and volume) of music you listen to. Some
people like that THUMPIN bass.

I think my Quads benefit immensely from a sub and it doesn't "thump"
except when called to do so.
If someone is striving for excellent sound on a budget...I would go for
a pair of mini's and a sub. I've heard a few setups like this which
really want for nothing at nominal listening levels.

That's not a stand alone system.
Infinity Primus 150 $100 at Circuit City
Onkyo receiver $150
Pioneer universal player <$200

Guess I should have said I need speakers for my computer only, since I
always listen to music through my computer at home. I listen mainly to
easy listening type music, but I like good bass too. So I guess I'm
looking for some great computer speakers under $500. Sorry if I misled
any of you.

Would I be able to use a powered sub with the ALP5's? Or would I even
need one?

Just thought some of you would be interested to know that I got the
Sony's. I'm using 2 of them with my sub in my fairly large living room.
They are simply amazing. I got mine for $59.97 a pair at Radio Shack on
clearance. If you need some bookshelf speakers do yourself a favor and
check em out!

Blessed be Radio Shack!
Seriously though, Sony are no strangers to speaker design. I remember
Sony bookshelf models earning top spots in 70s and 80s What Hi-Fi and
Hi-Fi Choice shoot-outs. They were about the only Japanese firm, apart
from Yamaha, that ever got a look-in with speakers; it was usually
always Mission or Heybrook or whatever. I'd say you got a bargain.

I should have mentioned, they are kind of big for bookshelf speakers.
